Starting Friday, all commissary shoppers in the KMC must bring their own bags or purchase a reusable option.
Officials at the Ramstein Commissary project that they will run out of free single-use plastic bags by the end of the day. The Vogelweh Commissary has already run out.
The change is part of a Europe-wide initiative aimed at reducing plastic waste.
Customers who forget bags can buy a variety of options ranging from 9 cents to $5.
The new rules also apply to online orders. Ramstein officials say they will use cardboard boxes instead of plastic bags if shoppers do not bring their own.
