A 68-year-old woman died in an apartment building fire in the east of Kaiserslautern on Saturday evening, according to the Westpfalz police department. Neighbors living on Kappellenweg noticed thick smoke and called police, according to a Westpfalz police statement, which did not say what time the fire was reported. Responding firefighters found the blaze in an attic apartment and extinguished it. The woman living in the apartment died at the scene, police said. A total of eight people live in the building, which was mostly intact after the fire. Damages are estimated in the five-figure range. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
