A wind turbine caught fire Thursday morning about 20 miles north of Sembach, causing damages that police estimated to be in the mid-six figure range.

The turbine at the Hungerberg-Gauersheim wind farm in Kirchheimbolanden is among many in the area, several of which can be seen along the A61 autobahn north of the Kaiserslautern Military Community.

“The fire broke out in the nacelle area, so a technical defect can be assumed,” Kirchheimbolanden police said in a statement.

Firefighters let the blaze burn “in a controlled manner,” the statement said. Residents in nearby villages were advised to keep their doors and windows closed Thursday morning due to the smoke.
