The Red Devils spent the night in second place after defeating Schalke 3-0 in Gelsenkirchen Friday evening.
While they can still drop a couple of slots following the rest of the weekend games, it is a big turnaround from the beginning of the season.
Striker Ragnar Ache got 1. FC Kaiserslautern on the way to its fourth win in the last six games, scoring his nineth goal of the season in the 12th minute.
The first half was evenly played between the former Bundesliga teams.
Aftere the intermission it was all FCK.
Daniel Hanslik upped the score in the 52nd minute, netting the ball with a left footer on a pass from Luca Sirch.
Nine minutes later, Daisuke Yokota scored his second goal of the season after taking a Hanslik pass into the box and firing a shot past Schalke keeper Justin Heekeren for the 3-0.
The win gives the Red Devils 23 points after 14 games. Everything is still close in Bundesliga 2, with only four points separating leader Paderborn from tenth-placed Hamburg.
Next up for the Red Devils is a 1 p.m. match Saturday at Fritz Walter Stadium against long-time rival Karlsruher SC.
