A tree fell on a house in Otterberg and another falling tree struck a moving car near the village, Westpfalz police said Wednesday after tallying the damages from high winds and persistent rain Tuesday.
The house on Ziegelhutte Street sustained about 30,000 euros in damages after being struck by a tree at around 4 p.m. in Otterberg, which is about 7 miles north of the U.S. Army’s Rhine Ordnance Barracks. The tree also took down a power line and damaged a nearby call, police said.
At roughly the same time, a 30-year-old driver reported narrowly escaping serious injury from a falling tree while traveling on the L382 between Otterberg and Baalborn. The tree trunk hit the Opel Astra, denting the passenger side door and broke the windshield.
Later that evening on the L382, residents in Schneckenhause reported a stream overflowing onto the road. The lane from Schallodenbach to Schneckenhausen was closed while firefighters unblocked a drain, Westpfalz police said.
