Polar air began flowing into Rheinland-Pfalz yesterday and is expected to bring the season’s first snow to the state, according to German Weather Service forecasts.
Temperatures dipped just below zero in the early morning hours Wednesday in the Kaiserslautern area but were creeping back above freezing at daybreak. Snow is still expected at higher elevations in Rheinland-Pfalz, particularly in the northern parts of the state.
In the southwest, which includes the KMC and Saarland, expect dry periods and partly cloudy skies, according to the German Weather Service forecast released at 7 a.m. Wednesday. However, some roads in the KMC may still be slick due to the rains over the past few days and last night’s freeze.
On Thursday, skies are forecast to be partly cloudy and largely dry. At most, the state will see isolated snow showers in the western forest and slippery conditions, according to the 7 a.m. Wednesday forecast.
On Friday, variable to heavily cloudy weather will continue, with rain or snow showers mostly in other parts of the state, particularly above 1,000-1,300 feet elevation. Kaiserslautern’s average elevation is 1,063 feet, with considerable variation and lower in the city center.
The bottom line: long-distance commuters can breathe a little easier while some children are likely to be disappointed over the shifting forecast that long showed a high probability of a little snow. If recent years are any indication, the white stuff will come eventually, though significant accumulations rarely last more than a week.
