A drunken 27-year-old man drove his car onto the pedestrian zone in downtown Kaiserslautern on Saturday evening, city police said. The driver stopped his car at St. Martin’s Platz, reclined his seat and fell asleep. While he was sleeping, his vehicle started to roll.

“Witnesses tried to wake the driver by knocking on the side window,” but the driver did not react, police said. Someone was able to open the car door and pull the hand brake.

Police said the driver had been drinking alcohol and was under the influence of narcotics. The man was taken to the police station and faces criminal proceedings for drunken driving.
