St. Martin’s Day celebrations coming to Kaiserslautern, Homburg

A St. Martin’s Day celebration will be take place Monday with a procession of children carrying lanterns through the streets of Kaiserslautern and Homburg.

The meeting point for the procession in Kaiserslautern is at St. Martin’s Square at 5:30 p.m. A horseman dressed as St. Martin, who legend says was a Roman soldier who gave his coat to a cold beggar on a winter night, is expected to arrive at 6 p.m. The lantern procession will follow.

The procession will lead through Spittelstraße, Kanalstraße, Salzstraße and Steinstraße to Platz der Kinderrechte, the former Stockhausplatz, the Rheinpfalz newspaper reported. A bonfire willtake place at the end..

In Homburg, the St Martin’s Day celebration will start at 5 p.m. People will gather at the historic market square on the foot of the city’s mountain Schlossberg. Children and adults are asked to bring lanterns. Torches and candles are not permitted for safety reasons.

The processions is scheduled to start at 5:15 p.m. when St. Martin arrives on his horse. The parade will go through the town’s center via St.-Michael-Straße, Schanzstraße, Gerberstraße, Talstraße and Eisenbahnstraße to finally come back to the market square, where also a bonfire will be set.

 “At the end, the children will receive a small surprise as a souvenir of the evening,” saarnews reported.
