Kaiserslautern police are keeping an eye on e-scooter riders this week with more frequent checks around the city center.

E-scooters are considered motor vehicles under German law and Westpfalz police say they want to reinforce the rules. That means checks for drug or alcohol use while operating scooters, as well as proof of insurance for privately owned scooters.

Additionally, police want e-scooter operators to refrain from using sidewalks and pedestrian zones, carrying additional riders and using cellphones while riding. The expanded checks will continue through Sunday.

Misuse of an e-scooter can result in fines, license suspension and criminal charges, depending on the severity of the violations. Click here for more information from the police on operating e-scooters.
