The Red Devils lost their German cup game Tuesday night, falling to first division side VfB Stuttgart 2-1.

The second-round loss in Stuttgart ended any hopes for a repeat of last season’s run to final in Berlin.

Stuttgart scored early on a 14th minute goal by Nick Woltemade.

While Stuttgart controlled the ball and opponent most of the time, 1. FC Kaiserslautern was not without chances to score. A corner kick in the 29th minute slipped past VfB defenders to Daisuke Yokota, who took the ball in full stride, but hit the post with his shot.

FCK tied the game in the 43rd minute on a penalty by Boris Tomiak, after Fabian Rieder fouled Marlon Ritter. The attack appeared to be just outside the box, but because there is no replay in the second round of cup play, the referee’s decision stood.

The second half got off to a fast start for Stuttgart with a shot by Rieder that FCK keeper Julian Krahl got his hands on.

In the 55th minute, Kaiserslautern striker Ragnar Ache got a shot off that just missed the goal.

After that, it was mostly VfB. A series of good scoring chances were missed before Chris Führich finally connected with a right-footer in the 76th minute to give Stuttgart the 2-1 lead.

Stuttgsrt held FCK at bay for the rest of the match, to advance to the round of 16.

Next up for the Red Devils is a 1:30 p.m. Sunday match at Fritz Walter Stadium against Magdeburg.

The team from eastern Germany is in ninth place, one place and one point ahead of Kaiserslautern.
