Kaiserslautern road partially opens after more than a decade

A map shows construction at Trippstader Strasse in Kaiserslautern.

The underpass at Trippstader Strasse near the Kaiserslautern main train station is finally open to traffic, if only in one direction for now. ()

For the first time in more than 10 years, drivers in Kaiserslautern can use a road that passes under the railway tracks not far from the main train station.

Construction on the Trippstadter Strasse underpass and the viaduct above it began a decade ago but was delayed by contractual issues.

Work resumed in 2020 and now one side of the bridge can finally be driven under in the direction of Zollamtstrasse/Karcherstrasse, SWR has reported.

The other side should be ready in about a year, SWR said, quoting city officials.

The old viaduct, which was built in 1845 and extended in 1935, was in poor condition. Three railway lines run over it.

The road underneath has been widened and sidewalks and a bike path are being built on both sides.
