The Armed Services Blood Program is organizing two blood drives to support U.S. and NATO forces at Sembach and Kleber Kaserne.

The drives are scheduled for Sept. 30 at the gym on Kleber Kaserne and Oct. 1 at Sembach Gym, both from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Recent changes in eligibility rules, including the removal of restrictions on those who spent time in Europe and the U.K. during the mad cow disease outbreak, as well as relaxed guidelines for LGBTQI+ individuals, have broadened the donor pool.

Those who recently received tattoos or traveled to areas with a malaria risk are now subject to a shorter three-month deferral period.

Appointments are encouraged, although Type O walk-ins will be accepted.

Program officials also said civilian employees and German residents may be eligible for administrative leave to participate, pending supervisor approval.

Children 10 and older are welcome at the blood drive but must sit away from the donation area for safety reasons. Children under 10 need an additional person, who is at least 12 years old and is not the blood donor, to supervise them. Donors must be at least 18 years old.
