The Octoberkerwe, one of the largest folk festivals in the Westpfalz region, will take place next month at Kaiserslautern’s Messeplatz, featuring a mix of thrilling rides, traditional German fare and family-friendly attractions.

The festival opens Oct. 18 at 5 p.m. with a parade starting at 6:30 p.m., followed by the ceremonial keg-tapping at 7 p.m. Fireworks will light up the sky at 9 p.m. on both the opening and closing nights, providing a colorful backdrop for festival-goers, city organizers said in a statement.

Attractions include popular rides such as the “White Wheel” Ferris wheel, the high-speed “Disco-Fever” carousel and the adrenaline-pumping “Avenger Royal,” a 360-degree swing ride. For those seeking a tamer experience, the family-friendly roller coaster “Coco Beach” offers a ride through a Caribbean-themed landscape.

Classic rides like the “Breakdance” will also be available, along with carnival staples like bumper cars.

In addition to the rides, Octoberkerwe will feature food stands offering traditional German dishes like bratwurst, pork knuckles and roasted chicken, as well as sweets such as candied almonds. Visitors can also shop various vendors, with spices, household items, clothing and handmade goods on offer.

A highlight of the festival is Family Day on Wednesday, Oct. 23, when ride prices and entry fees will be halved, and special attractions like free face painting and a balloon artist will be available to entertain children. Additionally, downtown stores open their doors to shoppers Oct. 20 from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The festival is open from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Oct. 18. Regular hours are 2 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturdays, 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Sundays and holidays, and 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays.
