Westpfalz Police arrested a 16-year-old near the Fackelbrunnen fountain in downtown Kaiserslautern around noon Wednesday after he carried what appeared to be a firearm in his waistband and reportedly threatened a passerby.

As officers approached, the teen attempted to flee but was quickly apprehended, police said in a statement.

After reaching for the weapon, officers warned of potential firearm use. The situation de-escalated when the teen surrendered without resistance. The “gun” turned out to be a soft-air pistol, officials said.

Minutes later, another incident unfolded at the nearby K In Lautern mall, where a young couple was involved in a dispute that escalated into a fight.

The couple suffered minor injuries and a man’s gold chain was reportedly stolen.

Police detained three suspects, two linked to the robbery and a third who was initially a witness to the altercation was found in possession of a small amount of cocaine and arrested, police said.

Investigations into both events are ongoing.
