Leaving a car window cracked open nets Neustadt man a traffic fine

A man trying to keep his car from feeling like an oven when he got back is now 15 euros poorer because of a German law that requires drivers to roll up their windows and lock their vehicles when they leave.

The man from Hambach who received the fine last week at the Friedrichstrasse parking lot in Neustadt, about 30 minutes from Kaiserslautern, wrote a letter to local newspaper Die Rheinpfalz to complain.

It’s largely subjective whether a traffic enforcement officer decides if a driver has taken “the necessary measures to avoid accidents or traffic disruptions when the vehicle is left,” according to Die Rheinpfalz. The Hambach man said he only cracked the window open.

The law doesn’t require convertible drivers to roll up their roof, Rheinpfalz reported, citing the automobile club ADAC. But a convertible with its top down must still have its windows rolled up. Under German law, this apparently makes perfect sense.
