A 37-year-old woman died after being struck by an ICE train at Hochspeyer Station on Monday evening after crossing the tracks at an unauthorized location, according to German Federal Police in Kaiserslautern.
The incident occurred at 7:49 p.m. when the woman attempted to cross from Platform 3 to Platform 2 at the station, according to a police statement released Tuesday.
The driver of the approaching ICE 9555 train spotted the woman and sent multiple warning signals, officials reported. She tried to get off the tracks upon seeing the train’s proximity but was hit by the high-speed train.
The woman was pronounced dead at the site of the accident.
As a result of the incident, the railway line was closed from 7:50 p.m. to 10:24 p.m., affecting 13 trains, officials said. A replacement bus service was arranged to accommodate stranded passengers.
“Tracks should only be crossed at designated points,” Federal Police officials said Tuesday. “Trains often travel at high speeds and are nearly silent on many routes. They also have a long braking distance and cannot swerve to avoid obstacles.”
