U.S. Army Col. Chad Vermillion has assumed command of the U.S. Army Medical Materiel Center, Europe, taking the reins of the crucial logistics hub at its headquarters in Kaiserslautern.

Vermillion, a leader with deep military roots, steps into his new role following a career spanning more than two decades. The change of command ceremony took place July 10.

A graduate of Florida State University’s ROTC program, Vermillion began his military service in 2001 and has since held numerous key positions, including chief of medical acquisitions and logistics for U.S. Special Operations Command in 2017. He deployed in support of Operation Spartan Shield as commander of the U.S. Military Hospital Kuwait.

Vermillion’s military awards include the Bronze Star Medal with one oak leaf cluster and the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, according to his unit biography.

He is joined in the assignment by his wife of 22 years, Kristin, whom he met while attending Florida State University.

U.S. Army Medical Materiel Center, Europe has been pivotal in several missions over the past years, according to command officials.

The center has played a key role in the COVID-19 pandemic response, the Afghan refugee crisis, Ukraine support through presidential drawdowns and various humanitarian missions.

Initially activated as the Rhein Medical Depot in 1951 and later stationed at Pirmasens’ Husterhöh Kaserne for several decades, the center moved to its current Kaiserslautern location in 2020.
