1.FC Kaiserslautern broke off its training camp in Italy, following the death of equipment manager Peter “Piet” Miethe, the club announced Thursday.
Miethe, who worked for the Red Devils for more than 20 years, died Wednesday evening in an accident in Italy. Germany’s Bild Zeitung reported he was riding a bicycle when he left the road and hit a tree.
According to FCK officials, Miethe started with the club in 2002 and had been part of the equipment managing team for a number of years, before moving up to the top job in 2022.
“Together with his family & friends, we mourn the loss of a great person. Rest in peace, dear Piet — we will miss you very much.” The Red Devils said in a Facebook post.
Miethe was known for always wearing shorts on the field, no matter what the temperature was.
The team headed back to Kaiserslautern, with practice temporarily cancelled. A test match scheduled for Sunday against St. Gallen was also called off.
The team is scheduled to play a mini tournament in Offenbach on July 20, before they play another friendly against 1860 Munich at Fritz Walter Stadium on July 27.
The 2024/25 second division season gets underway for Kaiserslautern on Aug. 4 in Ulm.
