A 23-year-old American man was arrested early Saturday morning in Kaiserslautern’s Old Town after an altercation outside a hookah bar, Westpfalz Police said in a statement Sunday.

The incident began when the man and another patron bumped into each other, escalating into an argument and physical fight likely fueled by alcohol, according to police.

Despite initial attempts by a responding police patrol to separate the men, the American continued to behave aggressively, leading officers to handcuff him, officials said in the statement. During the arrest, he reportedly kicked a police officer in the leg, injuring the man slightly.

The suspect was taken to the local police station, where a doctor conducted a blood test to assess his intoxication level. Police did not immediately release blood alcohol results. He was then handed over to the U.S. military police for further processsing.

The American now faces charges of assault and attacking law enforcement officers. Military officials did not immediately respond to a Stars and Stripes request for confirmation of his military affiliation on Sunday.
