A 20-year-old American driver crashed his Mini Cooper into a tree after speeding through a Mackenbach roundabout early Friday, police reported.

The accident occurred around 12:30 a.m. as the driver was heading from Ramstein Air Base towards Mackenbach.

The car continued into an adjacent embankment, where it was stopped by trees and bushes.

No other vehicles were involved in the accident. Police have ruled out alcohol as a factor in the crash and currently attribute the incident to excessive speed, according to officals.

The driver suffered minor injuries in the collision and was transported to a hospital by ambulance. The car was towed from the scene.

Military officials did not immediately state whether the driver was a service member, but military police responded to the scene, indicting military affiliation of the driver.
