The U-Boat U-17, a decomissioned German navy submarine, is set to be transported from the Technik Museum Speyer to its final destination at the Technik-Museum Sinsheim on Sunday.
On Sunday the U-boat will be transported on the first leg of the journey from the museum in Speyer to the Rhine at Auwald natural harbor.
The move involves a large-scale heavy transport by road and Rhine and Neckar rivers, necessitating significant road closures and traffic restrictions, Speyer city officials said.
Transporting the submarine poses a number of logistiical challenges, museum officials said. As it is too large for several bridges over the smaller Neckar river on the way to the museum, the submarine has to be tilted by 70 degrees and will travel the river on its side.
Spectators are advised not to travel by car due to the lack of parking spaces along the detour and transport route. The city suggests using large public parking lots in the city instead. The sidewalk along Industriestraße will provide a good vantage point for viewing.
U-17 was the first German submarine in American waters after World War II and the first submarine to enter the port of Baltimore after the last submarine anchored there in 1916, according museum officials.
The extensive transportation route for U-17 continues beyond June 30:
