Kaiserslautern is gearing up for its largest folk festival, the Maikerwe, which will transform the Messeplatz grounds into a fairground from May 24 to June 3, city officials announced.
The festival promises a blend of rides, beer garden areas and food vendors catering to visitors of all ages, according to the announcement.
The annual event kicks off at 5 p.m. on May 24 with a ceremonial keg tapping by Mayor Beate Kimmel. The opening day will also feature a parade and a fireworks display at 10 p.m., with a repeat performance on the closing night.
Attendees can look forward to a variety of spectacular rides, including the towering Ferris wheel “Jewel” and the “Airwolf,” which offers a flying experience with controlled spins.
For those seeking a splash of adventure, “Rio Rapidos,” the world’s largest portable whitewater rafting ride, touts a refreshing ride experience. Traditional German fairground staples like the “Breakdance” ride and bumper cars will also return, officials said.
A special family day on May 29 offers half-price rides and numerous discounts, making it a good time for families to visit calmer attractions like the pony ride.
The annual German-American friendship Day on May 31 will celebrate cultural connections with performances by the U.S. Air Forces Europe Band, cheerleaders and square dancers.
