Baseball
Robert D. Edgren
Head coach — Brett Lehner, 15th season.
Key performers — Parker Kuns, Sr., C-P-SS; Micah Magat, Sr., IF-OF; Mark Gillett, Sr., IF-OF; Seth Low, Sr., 2B-OF; Liam McDonald, Fr.; Levi Kuns, Fr.; Toby Davidson, So.; Isaac French, Fr.; Charles Richardson, Fr.
Outlook — Rebuilding, with the constant turnover and the constant snow that forces indoor training, both staples of Eagles spring sports. But the returning players are a year older, a year wiser, a year more experienced.
E.J. King
Head coach — Matthew Carl, third season.
Key performers — Jaden Arocho, So., P.
Outlook — Rebuilding. Cobras lost several starters from last season but should continue to be competitive with Arocho on the hill.
Matthew C. Perry
Head coach — A.J. Edwards, second season.
Key performers — Aira Fujinuma, Jr., P; Joseph Steenhoven, Sr., 2B; Akiro Hiromoto, So., P-C; Taisei Shimakura, So., P-3B; Dylan DeGuzman, So., CF; Xander Grantham, Sr., IF; Andrew Roberts, Jr., OF; Jacob Rock, Jr., OF; Hiyoshi Oliver, Jr., OF; Tyler Steenhoven, So., P.
Outlook — Reloading-contending. Solid foundation of experienced ballplayers balanced with youngsters who are far from new from the sport.
Yokota
Head coach — John Liss, first season (previously served as an assistant)
Key performers — Casey Bumpers, Sr., P-C-SS; Brailyn Ivey, Jr., 1B; Takumi Iwazaki-Chung, Jr., P-OF-SS.
Outlook — Reloading-contending. Panthers have plenty of senior veterans and some experienced freshmen who are doing well.
Zama
Head coach(es) — Lawrence Ungar, Joshua Dawes, first seasons.
Key performers — Ayden Moore, Sr., P-SS; Aiden Hinkle, So., P-2B; Toro McClendon, Jr., P-3B; Hugo Sherratt, Fr., C; Brody Kuchera, Fr., P-3B.
Outlook — Rebuilding-reloading. Graduation and transfers, including the head coach of the last five years, hit hard. Enough veteran blood returns that the two-time defending Far East Division II champion Trojans can be competitive with time.
Kinnick
Head coach — Chad Stark, eighth season.
Key performers — Arashi Blocton, Sr., P-SS-C; Noah Berhow, Jr., P-SS; Shobu Deeter, So., OF; Jaden DeCastro, Jr., C (transferred from Rota, Spain); Dale McNamara, Jr., P (transferred from Guam); Kayden Tam, Fr., P-OF.
Outlook — Rebuilding after losing seven seniors. Blocton is the lone senior and the team’s leader. A handful of experienced players returns and the PCS plane handed the Red Devils a pair of players not new to the game. Stark says the future is promising.
Softball
Yokota
Head coach — Steven Cruz, second season.
Key performers — Zaylee Gubler, Sr., P; Erica Haas, Sr., P-SS; Molly Bogdan, So., IF; Kayla Bogdan, Sr., C; Siera Light, Sr., IF-OF; A.J. Jackson, Sr., IF.
Outlook — Reloading-contending. The core of the team that won the last two D-II titles returns and appears primed for more. Built for now, built to last, assuming the five new freshmen stay around awhile.
Perry
Head coach — Brad Cramer, eighth season.
Key performers — Leah Hamner, Sr., P-1B; Emma Roberts, Jr., C-UT; Laney Mullins, So., SS-UT; Alexandria Altig, Fr., 2B-UT; Miah Apperson, Fr., 3B-UT; Elizabeth Shoop, Fr., OF-UT.
Outlook — Rebuilding. Graduation hammered the ranks, so Cramer and the Samurai will be looking to develop a new crop.
King
Head coach — McKinzy Best, 13th season.
Key performers — Moa Best, Sr., C; Michelle Breyette, Sr., P-3B; Sarah Goleman, Sr., 1B-C; Pia Legrito, Sr., OF; Mila Nishimura-Reed, Jr., P-1B; Miu Best, Sr., 2B; Laura Dougherty, Sr., CF; Nylirie Costa, So., 3B.
Outlook — Reloading-contending. At last, Best’s daughters are playing softball together, with Miu coming over from soccer. PCS and transfers didn’t help, but a strong core of veterans from last year’s D-I runner-up team are back and vying for more.
Zama
Head coach — Veronica Tipton-Jones, eighth season, last coached softball in 2012.
Key performers — Camryn Williams, Sr., 3B-SS; Kira Herring, So., P; Evangeline Nelson, Jr., C; Emma Sakamoto-Flack, Sr., 1B-3B; Alicia Brinegar, Sr., 1B.
Outlook — Somewhere in between. A good core of veterans returns and Jones says she’s hopeful the team can reach a competitive level by season’s end.
Edgren
Head coach — Robert McDonald, first season.
Key performers — Kaitlyn Pasion, Sr., C-2B; Sydney Johnson, Sr., OF; Teniya Nelson, Jr., 2B-C; Summer Martinez, Jr., OF-3B-P; Keira Marrero, Jr., P-OF; Olivia O’Neill, So., OF-3B; Kaiya Pasion., So., OF-SS; Cinfani Davis, So., SS (transferred from Texas).
Outlook — Reloading. Plenty of players are back; however, graduation claimed the team’s two starting pitchers the last two seasons. Davis will add some spark, having played club ball in the States. Could be a dark horse.
Kinnick
Head coach — Taylor Kigerl-Hill, third season.
Key performers — Sydnee Walker, Jr. C; Teora Miyashiro, Jr., P; Emily Kitts, Jr., 1B; Reina Gardner, Sr., 2B; Kay Kim, Jr., 2B; Lily Lucas, Fr., P.
Outlook — Rebuilding-reloading. Could contend if Lucas, who brings strong skills to the table, becomes the staff ace. This is a freshman-heavy team, but youngsters who have played the game.
Boys soccer
Yokota
2024 season record — 15-7-1
Head coach — Kurt Everest, first season.
Key performers — Evan Horne, Jr., GK; Alberto Nakamoto, Jr., D; Samuel Tokiyoshi-Gray, Sr., D; Luke Harbert, Jr., MF; Brandon Christenson, Sr., MF.
Outlook — Rebuilding. Only three seniors return to a team with plenty of youngsters, some of whom aren’t new to soccer. Everest is hopeful the team can make strides throughout the season.
Zama
2024 season record — 8-13-3.
Head coach — Chad Guisinger, third season.
Key performers — Chris Jones, Sr.; Kai Fredendall, Sr.; Noah Moreno, Sr.; Aidan Gilmore, Sr., GK; Joseph Stroud, So., GK.
Outlook — Rebuilding. Graduation and transfers took away 28 goals. But the Trojans are strong in the back end with two returning keepers. A question of how quickly the new leadership helps the team develop.
Edgren
2024 season record — 1-17-0.
Head coach — Jeffrey Carter, first season.
Key performers — Santiago Castano, Sr., MF; Aidan Lehner, So., F; Luke Lehner, So, MF; Rain Rodriguez, Sr., F; Ethan Young, Jr., GK.
Outlook — Rebuilding, but with a slew of underclassmen who help form a strong foundation. Depending on how quickly they develop, the Eagles could be competitive by season’s end. Like all Eagles teams, not being able to practice outdoors until late March, if then, doesn’t help.
King
2024 season record — 9-8-3.
Head coach — Ricky Andrew, sixth season
Key performers — Amin Alipourkashki, Sr., MF; Damian Perez, Sr., MF-F (25 goals); Gabriel Leak, Jr., MF; Nolan Grubb, So., F; Bryant McCool, Fr., F; Danial Leak, Fr., MF; Kento Monto, Sr., GK; Arona Headley, Sr.; Ben Duncanson, So., MF.
Outlook — Reloading and could contend for D-II. Perez has scored 41 goals in the last two seasons and will again be counted on to fill the net. Andrew is emphasizing speed and quickness; if the Cobras pick up their game pace, they could be a force to be reckoned with.
Perry
2024 season record — 10-11-6.
Head coach — Mark Lange, 21st season.
Key performers — Ren Spinosi, Jr., D-F (15 goals); Jalen Cooley, Jr., MF; Preston Ramirez, So., MF-F; Noah Charles, Fr., MF (played club ball at Yokosuka); Kameron Ramos, Jr., MF.
Outlook — Rebuilding-reloading. Most of the team returns, including the whole defense, anchored by Spinosi. Adding Ramos, who may be the school’s top male athlete, is a calculated gamble by Lange, who has had a penchant for adding players from other sports. Not many seniors, but youngsters who are knowledgeable about the game.
Kinnick
2024 season record — 21-3-1.
Head coach — Tim Rippeth, seventh season.
Key performers — Koboyo Awesso, Jr., F (19 goals, 13 assists); Kai Tsuchiya, Sr., MF (11 goals); Javier Arroyo, Sr., GK-D; Mykhi Russell, Jr., D; Nick Moore, Sr., MF-F (30 goals); Esteban Diaz, Jr., D.
Outlook — Contending. In Awesso, Tsuchiya and Moore, they return 60 goals, though losing Awesso’s older brother Leon to graduation hurts. A solid core of veterans from a team that won Far East Division I in 2023 and came in second last year.
Girls soccer
Kinnick
2024 season record — 21-3.
Head coach — Nico Hindie, 21st season.
Key performers — Alyssa Staples, Jr., D-F (24 goals); Valentina Sacca, Jr., D-MF; Scarlet Seiders, Jr., F (12 goals); Victoria Justice, Jr., M; Rachael Vite, Jr., F, F; Giovanna Kennedy, Sr., MF; Julia Blackwell, Jr., D.
Outlook — Contending for their third D-I title in six Far East tournaments; they’ve come up just short the last two years. Graduation hurt the Red Devils, who lost Bree Withers and her 54 goals and 39 assists the last two seasons. But they’re junior heavy. Staples is arguably the team’s best scoring option.
Yokota
2024 season record — 17-5-2. Defending Far East Division II champion.
Head coach — Matthew Whipple, 19th season.
Key performers — Jessica Franks, Sr., MF-F; Indi Avellan, Sr.; Vita Duran, Sr.; Gabi Burgoyne, Sr.; Angel Mangalit, Sr.; Emma Smathers, Sr.; Rebekah Spafford, Sr.
Outlook — Rebuilding. Graduation (Hailey Riddels, 33 goals) and transfers (Aubrey Oh, 37 goals, 14 assists) clobbered the Panthers’ lineup; still, they have some veteran blood from last year’s championship team. Just a question of how quickly they develop the up-and-coming youngsters.
Zama
2023 season record — 4-12-3.
Head coach — Jill Smith, third season.
Key performers — Keisha Steele-Loli, Sr., GK; Julie Bitor, Sr., MF; Bella Hunter, Jr., F; Isabella Rivera Munoz, Sr., MF; Jessie Hunter, Fr., F.
Outlook — Rebuilding, but there’s some serious scoring potential in the younger Hunter. Steele-Loli returns at keeper and has a wealth of experience. Just need some time to develop.
Edgren
2024 season record — 1-18-1.
Head coach — Hoa Nguyen, first season (coached for nearly two decades at Kadena).
Key performers — Saige Whitmore, Jr., D; Amber Baltazar, Sr., MF; Kaleiana Alonzo, Jr., F; Amy Beck, So., wing; Nadiah Miller, Jr., D; Danni Waldo, So., GK.
Outlook — Rebuilding. Nguyen, who built Far East champion teams at Kadena, says he plans to take a long-term approach to building the Eagles into a contender. He has 16 new players, most who are new to the sport, but some have played club ball and have some knowledge of the game.
Perry
2024 season record — 10-10-4.
Head coach — Daniel Burns, fourth season.
Key performers — Sasha Malone, Sr., MF-D (14 goals); Leilani Zuniga, So., MF (15 goals); McKenzie Steele, Sr., MF-D; Priscilla Ramirez, Fr., MF-F; Elieza Mae Cuaco, So. D; Brooklyn Hunter, So., GK; Naiya Burford, Fr., D; Ainsle Schiekle, Fr., D.
Outlook — Contending, contending, contending. This could be the year for the Samurai, who just missed in the Division II final last year against Yokota. Ramirez brings knowledge of the game and scoring firepower. Coupled with Zuniga and Malone, the Samurai should go far.
King
2023 season record — 19-7-3
Head coach — Jesse Dare, second season.
Key performers — Alex Bottorff, Sr., GK; Rosie McGrath, Jr.; Joanna Hall, Jr., D; Kaylee Mapa., Sr., MF.
Outlook — Somewhere in between. The Cobras do have 10 players back, including Bottorff in net, and other returners have shown growth since last season. Time will tell.
