BASKETBALL
BOYS
Daegu Warriors
2023-24 season record — 8-2 league, 12-6 overall.
Head coach — Oliver Herazo, first season.
Key performers — Andrew Burks, Sr., F; Jude Velazquez, So., G; Xavier Brown, G; Ethan Whittington, G; Alex Kenny, C.
Outlook — Rebuilding. Warriors graduated or lost to transfer about 75 percent of their offense. Burks is solid underneath and the Warriors do have some backcourt talent. But Herazo says he believes his team can compete.
Humphreys Blackhawks
2023-24 season record — 3-7 league, 6-13 overall, sixth in Far East Division I.
Head coach — Ashley Gooch, second season.
Key performers — Elijah Kidd, Jr., SF; Brandon Howell, Sr., G; Joshua Ward, Jr., G; Daniel McMillan, Jr., F-C; Joshua Canion, Jr., G.
Outlook — Reloading-contending. Good core of veterans, with some underclass who bring raw talent to the table. Could be the most talented team the Blackhawks have had since their championship years of the 2010s.
Osan Cougars
2022-23 season record — 5-6 league, 10-10 overall.
Head coach — Walt Allen, first season.
Key performers — Matthew Siebert, Sr., G; Benjamin Ziegler, Jr., C; Jayden Hightower, Sr., G; Nysean Shorter, Jr., F; Zephaniah Queen, So., G.
Outlook — Rebuilding. Small core of veterans and youngsters with some potential. It will take some time to put the pieces together and be competitive.
GIRLS
Daegu Warriors
2023-24 season record — 9-1 league, 13-4 overall, fourth in Far East Division II Tournament.
Head coach — Susan Oltmer, third season.
Key performers — India Acevedo, F; Caylee Shipman, G; Denali Clites, G; Jaellin Abaya, G.
Outlook — Rebuilding. All experienced veterans either graduated or transferred; the entire offense from last year is gone. It will take time and work.
Humphreys Blackhawks
2023-24 season record — 6-4 league, 10-5 overall.
Head coach — Misty Galamison, first season.
Key performers — Lillian McCants, Sr., F; Leilani Hunter, Sr., F; Eivah Chargualaf, G; Haley Mitchell, F; Mikayla Thomas, G.
Outlook — Rebuilding. Only two returning seniors. Still, there’s potential in the rest of the lineup that could make the Blackhawks a competitor before the season ends.
Osan Cougars
2023-24 season record — 6-4 league, 7-11 overall, seventh in Far East Division II.
Coach — Euroya Lauzon, second season.
Key performers — Hanna Rutland, Sr., G; Chloe Harman, Sr., G; Grace Williams, So., G; Losaline Ulukivaiola, Fr., F.
Outlook — Rebuilding. A young team that could learn quickly and become competitive. Fairly rich in guards.
WRESTLING
Daegu Warriors
Head coach — Zachary Colflesh, second season.
Key performers — Nikolas Hawkins, Sr., 152-60; Caesar Trujillo, Jr., 126; Jaiden Williams, So., 139-45; Nick Faubion, Sr., 107-114.
Outlook — Rebuilding-reloading. The Warriors are as close to having a full lineup as they have in 15-plus years. Colflesh says he’s hoping to be competitive with the rest of the league.
Humphreys Blackhawks
Head coach — Ben Pak, sixth season.
Key performers — Joseph Fernal, Sr.; Matthew Nubin, Jr., defending 145 Far East champion; Amare Jorgan, Jr., 215; Andrew Schlecht, Jr.; Anthony Johnson, Jr.
Outlook — Reloading. Nubin and Morgan headline a team that always faces the two-year transfer round that makes it hard to develop a competitive program. The other teams in the league aren’t deep, which doesn’t help regarding getting the preparation needed for Far East.
Osan Cougars
Far East tournament championships — 1.
Head coach — Michael Paul, sixth season.
Key performer — Martin Heffele, Sr., 215; Logan Seen, Fr.; Ayden Canizales, Jr.
Outlook — Rebuilding. Thin on experienced wrestlers but hoping a handful of newcomers in the room can become competitive quickly.
