A black-and-white, 1950s-era image of a man, seen from behind, standing on a sidewalk and looking through the front window of a shop.

(Lloyd A. Borguss/Stars and Stripes)

London, U.K., Nov. 13, 1958: A man looks into the window of a radio repair shop in London.

Sometimes, Stars and Stripes archivists find a couple of shots on a roll that have nothing to do with the assignment featured on the rest of the roll of film. This happens when the photographer — out on assignment for the paper — has a few frames left on his roll of film and doesn’t want it to go to waste. So he or she snaps a few shots on his way back to the office.

This composition caught the eye of Stars and Stripes photographer Lloyd A. Borguss on his way back from capturing the captivating Eartha Kitt at the London Palladium, and is the only shot from the six ten-frame rolls Borguss filled that day that does not feature the sultry singer.

Borguss retired from Stars and Stripes in 1974 after an almost two-decade career with the paper, snapping amazing images of not just the many celebrities and heads of state he encountered, but also of every day scenes like this one.
