Afghanistan - Pakistan border, October 2004: The Hindu Kush montains in northern Afghanistan and nothern Pakistan are barren and rocky, but between the peaks and ridges are lush valleys. People living in the valleys, such as the Swat Valley, still make everyday items such as spice boxes and ornate, if sometimes crude, furnishings. This girl helps out her family by running errands, carrying a pan of cheese, in her remote Afghan village just across the border from Pakistan.
