Cheerful parasols are lined up on the outside terrace of the Zephyr Diner

(Alfred Morrissey/Stars and Stripes)

Roedelheim, Germany, June 17, 1950: Cheerful parasols are lined up on the outside terrace of the Zephyr Diner. A sign reading “Blow Horn For Curb Service” alerts patrons for the dine-in-your-car option.

The diner — which opened in 1949 as part of the European Exchange System — was located on the autobahn north of Frankfurt, on the Westerbachstrasse, Roedelheim. It was the first diner in the European Command area. It no longer exists, but it is unknown when it closed.

Stars and Stripes republished several of the images of the Zephyr diner over the years. All images taken by a Stars and Stripes photographer during one “assignment” are digitized by Stars and Stripes archives’ staff. For the Zephyr diner assignment that meant a total of 45 images taken on both 35mm and 4x5 film.

Check out additional images of the diner here and here.
