Person hands out boxes of Jujyfruits candy to local Vietnamese children

(Joe Kalamick/Stars and Stripes)

Saigon, South Vietnam, October 1969: Unidentified person hands out boxes of Jujyfruits candy to local Vietnamese children in Saigon.

This photo was one of many taken during Stars and Stripes photographer Joe Kalamick’s multi-day assignment in Saigon where he covered a press conference, photographed men taking measurements outside of the U.S. embassy, and the inside of a transport plane’s cockpit. No caption information survived for any of the images and none of the images taken were published, so archives staff have little to go on.

Most negatives and photo prints in the Stars and Stripes archives have at least the minimal information of a photographer name and title, but even if more is found, archives staff often spend hours researching and adding information to the images before they are saved in their final digital format and can be found in the future through keyword searches in the paper’s in-house digital archive.
