Hermann Goering

(Don Sheppard/Stars and Stripes)

Hermann Goering at the International Military Tribunal in Nuremberg, Germany, as sketched by Stars and Stripes artist Don “Shep” Sheppard on Oct. 1, 1946, the day the verdict was read in court.

Goering was a leader of the Nazi Party and one of the primary architects of the Nazi police state in Germany. He was the highest-ranking Nazi to stand trial after the war.

Goering was convicted of crimes against peace, war crimes, crimes against humanity, and conspiracy to commit the criminal acts listed in the first three counts at the Nuremberg trials and sentenced to death by hanging. He committed suicide several hours before the scheduled execution.

The sketch of Goering is one of six of Shep’s original drawings discovered in Stars and Stripes’ Europe archives and recently digitized. All were drawn on the day the verdicts were read.

See all sketches, read the original 1946 Stars and Stripes article documenting the verdicts, as well as the work of two other Stars and Stripes artists who also documented the trials with pen and ink here.
