The LiCalzi family in the garden of their home in Korea in 1959

(Andrew Headland Jr./Stars and Stripes)

Seoul, South Korea, July 1959: Frances LiCalzi works on the flower garden in front of the home she shares with her husband Maj. James S. LiCalzi, and her daughter, Pamela. The LiCalzi family of five (Maj. and Ms. LiCalzi have two sons as well), moved into one of the 88 new homes in the U.S. Korean Military Advisory Group (KMAG) housing compound at the Seoul Area Command in June 1959. The compound was designed to look like an American suburb with Western-looking, tile-roofed houses, broad paved streets and lush lawns.

Read the story and see additional photos of the then new compound and the LiCalzis and other KMAG families moving in here.
