Kuwait City, Kuwait, February 1991: Graffiti marks an overturned Iraqi truck outside of Kuwait City on the road to Basra and Baghdad. The road was labeled “Highway to death,” after images of miles and miles of destroyed and abandoned vehicles — destroyed in allied bombing raids against retreating Iraq army — appeared in the U.S. press.
