Tokyo, April 10, 1961: Princess Michiko admires a fountain built in front of the Tokyo Imperial Palace in honor of her second wedding anniversary. Shigeo Mizuno (right), president of the Sankei Newspaper in Tokyo, explains the fountain’s operation to the princess. Crown Prince Akihito was unable to accompany her to dedication ceremonies due to illness. The fountain has three pedestals spraying water continuously into a pool, 109-feet long and 60-feet wide. Construction costs were covered by a memorial fund begun by the Japanese people when the prince and princess were married.
