Speyer, Germany, Sept. 14, 2000: Engineers from the Virginia National Guard’s 1031st Engineer Company put the final touches on one half of the floating bridge before attempting to connect the two pieces. Boats kept each half from floating away while the engineers interlocked all the bays. Members of the 1031st arrived in Germany on Sept. 5 for two weeks of training from the 502nd Engineering Company, an active-duty unit based in Hanau, Germany.
