A soldier who evaded arrest after stabbing a fellow soldier in her barracks room at Fort Cavazos more than two decades ago was sentenced to more than 16 years in prison after advances in DNA allowed investigators to break the case.

Another 1,140 soldiers working in support and sustainment jobs will deploy to the U.S.-Mexico border to help federal agents, the military announced Friday, bringing the total number of troops working in support of Customs and Border Protection to over 5,000.
