Rose Thayer

Rose L. Thayer is based in Austin, Texas, and she has been covering the western region of the continental U.S. for Stars and Stripes since 2018. Before that she was a reporter for Killeen Daily Herald and a freelance journalist for publications including The Alcalde, Texas Highways and the Austin American-Statesman. She is the spouse of an Army veteran and a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in journalism. Her awards include a 2021 Society of Professional Journalists Washington Dateline Award and an Honorable Mention from the Military Reporters and Editors Association for her coverage of crime at Fort Hood.

Army testing new policies to allow ride-share drivers on bases

The pilot program will allow drivers access during the next two months at Fort Bliss, Texas, Fort Bragg, N.C., Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash.; and Schofield Barracks, Fort Shafter and Tripler Army Medical Center in Hawaii. More than 600,000 service members, their families, retirees and civilians use the six installations.


Army sending another 1,000 troops to US-Mexico border

Another 1,140 soldiers working in support and sustainment jobs will deploy to the U.S.-Mexico border to help federal agents, the military announced Friday, bringing the total number of troops working in support of Customs and Border Protection to over 5,000.
