NAPLES, Italy — The Navy is searching for a sailor who did not report for watch Tuesday and might have gone overboard.

The sailor was with the amphibious assault ship USS Boxer, which was conducting maritime operations in the Gulf of Aden, according to a release from U.S. Navy 5th Fleet.

After a search of the ship, a possible man overboard was reported about 4 p.m., according to 5th Fleet spokesman Lt. Frederick Martin.

Helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft from Boxer, as well as aircraft from the carrier USS Ronald Reagan and a P-3 patrol aircraft conducted an airborne search Tuesday, while Boxer, the USNS Alan Shepard and USS Mitscher conducted a surface search, according to 5th Fleet.

Fleet representatives would not release additional information about the sailor.

As of Wednesday morning, multiple air and surface units were still searching for the sailor, Martin said in an email.

Boxer is based in San Diego and has been deployed to 5th Fleet waters since February as the flagship of Amphibious Squadron 1.
