The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended its seven-day search for missing boater Jeffrey Hattori, seen here showing off a catch in front of his 14-foot skiff, the Lady G. (U.S. Coast Guard)

The U.S. Coast Guard suspended its weeklong search for a missing boater near Guam, while a separate effort to find a U.S. Navy sailor continued into its third day Monday.

First responders on Saturday officially ended the search for Jeffrey Hattori, 58, who was reported missing April 12 after departing Guam for a recreational fishing trip, U.S. Coast Guard Forces Micronesia/Sector Guam said in a news release Monday.

Searchers covered more than 120,000 square miles with help from military ships and aircraft, as well as tools such as self-locating datum marker buoys to help predict ocean currents.

“Suspending this search is heartbreaking, as we’ve poured every available resource and ounce of resolve into finding Mr. Hattori for his family and community,” Lt. Chelsea Garcia, search and rescue mission coordinator, said in the release. “The immense ocean and the absence of any sign have tested us.”

The search will remain paused unless new information emerges.

“Our partners — Guam Fire Rescue, the U.S. Navy, and local supporters — remain ready to act on any new lead and are deeply grateful for the community’s vigilance and support,” Garcia said.

Hattori’s family requested a delay in publicly announcing the suspension until Monday, Coast Guard spokeswoman Chief Warrant Officer 2 Sara Muir told Stars and Stripes by email that day.

Meanwhile, the search continued Monday for a missing sailor identified as Gabriel D. Holt, who is assigned to the visiting aircraft carrier USS Nimitz. He was last seen at 11:57 p.m. Friday between Hotel Nikko and Gun Beach, according to the Guam Police Department.

Holt is described as 6 feet tall, 192 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a white tank top, green shorts and gray shoes, according to the department’s official Instagram account.

Muir confirmed that a 45-foot vessel from Coast Guard Station Apra Harbor and the Coast Guard cutter Oliver Henry were assisting in that search. She referred further questions to the Navy.

Lt. Cmdr. Tim Pietrack, spokesman for Carrier Strike Group 11, declined to provide additional details about Holt or the circumstances of his disappearance, citing privacy laws and the ongoing investigation.

“All available agencies are actively engaged in efforts to locate the missing sailor,” Pietrack said in an email Monday. “The search is ongoing, and we are committed to fully cooperating with local authorities while search and rescue efforts continue.”

He urged anyone with information about Holt to contact the Guam Police Department at 671-649-6330.

The Nimitz, which first pulled into Guam on Friday, departed the island Monday, according to a news release that day from the carrier.

The Guam Police Department acknowledged but did not immediately respond to a request for comment Monday.
