A sailor with the fast attack submarine USS Chicago and his wife were killed last week when a truck hit their car at a toll bridge plaza near Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor, south of Seattle, the Navy confirmed Wednesday.

Fire Control Technician 2nd Class Jeremy Kirkmeyer was identified by Submarine Group 9 at Naval Station Kitsap-Bangor as the sailor killed in the Aug. 1 crash.

Kirkmeyer's wife was also killed in the crash but was not identified by the Navy. Local news reports identified her as Torrey Kirkmeyer.

The Kirkmeyers were killed when a pickup truck slammed into their car at the Tacoma Narrows Bridge Toll Booth Plaza in Gig Harbor, near the base.

The truck was traveling east at high speed on Route 16 with a driver and occupant, according to a preliminary report by the Washington State Patrol.

The truck had its cruise control on, crossed lanes and did not brake before the collision, forcing the car into a toll plaza structure, killing the sailor and his wife.

Authorities said the truck was driven by a 61-year-old and had a 63-year-old passenger. They were taken to a local hospital with injuries. No further details were available Wednesday morning.

Naval Base Kitsap and Submarine Readiness Squadron 31 have assigned counselors and chaplains to support sailors and friends affected by the incident.

Washington State Patrol said a preliminary review did not indicate that alcohol or drug-use was involved in the crash, which remains under investigation.
