CAMP COURTNEY, Okinawa — About 30 families have been without power on this Marine Corps base since late Sunday evening, with no timeline for its restoration, according to the service.
The outage began around 10 p.m., Marine Corps Installations Pacific spokesman 1st Lt. Grant Hoel told Stars and Stripes by email Tuesday. He declined to state the cause of the outage.
“Maintenance teams are working diligently to fully restore power and allow all base services to return to normal operations,” he wrote. “An exact timeline of full restoration of power is not known at this time.”
Approximately 30 family housing units and an unspecified number of barracks for unaccompanied Marines on the upper side of the camp remained without power as of Tuesday afternoon, command spokesman Maj. Brett Dornhege-Lazaroff said by phone Tuesday.
Marine units on the base are on generator power, Hoel said. Courtney is home to the headquarters for III Marine Expeditionary Force, 3rd Marine Division and 3rd Marine Expeditionary Brigade.
Emergency services and the chow hall remain “fully functional,” Hoel added. He declined to provide further details on what services remain without power in a follow-up email.
However, an internal news email from the installations command sent via Oki News Today stated all other services were disrupted as of Tuesday morning.
An allowance for temporary on- or off-base lodging has been provided to families affected by the outage and will be processed through the Kadena Housing Office, the email states.
People who require financial assistance should call the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society at DSN 315-645-7808 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., or the Red Cross at 877-272-7737 outside of those hours, according to the email.
Families who have relocated during the outage will be responsible for getting their children to Department of Defense Education Activity schools, including Bechtel Elementary and Ryukyu Middle on Kadena Air Base and Kubasaki High on Camp Foster. Existing bus routes will remain in effect, the email states.
The Child Development Center remains closed, according to a post on the Camps Courtney and McTureous Facebook page at 4:57 a.m. Tuesday.
