Chesty XVI, the official mascot of Marine Barracks Washington, was promoted to the rank of Corporal last week, embodying the Marine Corps’ legacy and values.

Carlos Del Toro, in his final days as Navy secretary, presided over the ceremony on Jan. 16. Commandant of the Marine Corps Gen. Eric M. Smith was also in attendance.

Chesty XVI enlisted in the Marine Corps February 2022 and was promoted to private first class that December. He relieved Chesty XV of his duties on May 6, 2022, and marched in his debut parade that evening. In January 2024, he was promoted to Lance Corporal. He wears two medals on his uniform: the National Defense Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

Chesty XVI is the 16th Marine Corps mascot to bear the name, which honors Lt. Gen. Lewis “Chesty” Puller, one of the most decorated Marines in the Corps’ history.

Over the years, numerous English bulldogs have faithfully served at the Barracks, with some receiving formal burial honors within the Barracks’ hallowed grounds.
