The Marine killed in a Humvee rollover accident in California over the weekend was a 26-year-old Indiana native, according to the service.

Staff Sgt. Jerry Betzold died Sunday during training at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms, Calif. He was injured a day earlier and transported to a local hospital but later succumbed to his injuries.

Betzold represented “all that is good and pure in our nation and Corps,” Marine Col. David Hart said in a statement Monday.

No other Marines were injured in the accident, which is being investigated.

Betzold was from the Indianapolis suburb of Avon and joined the Corps in 2016. Trained as an infantryman, he was promoted to staff sergeant in March.

On Facebook, there was an outpouring from fellow Marines and friends for Betzold.

“A wonderful squad leader, mentor and great personality,” wrote one Marine.

Another added: “Incredible leader and an amazing person. Extremely grateful for everything you taught me and all the good hard training. You will be forever missed.”

Others recalled Betzold’s easygoing way and ability to make the best out of tough situations.

“You were always lighthearted and could be found with a smile on your face regardless of the weather, conditions or situation,” wrote a Marine Corps friend. “You were a Marines Marine for sure.”

His decorations included numerous good conduct and commendation medals. He also received the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

“Our hearts and full support will remain with his family and friends as we all navigate this extremely difficult time,” Hart said.
