The U.S. Coast Guard came to the rescue of Barstool Sports owner and founder Dave Portnoy, who lost control of his boat Monday in Nantucket Harbor.

“We almost lost Captain Dave to mother ocean today,” he wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Thanks to the #uscoastguard for saving Captain Dave’s life.”

Portnoy, who boasts millions of social media followers thanks to Barstool, a sports and pop culture website, and his popular “One Bite” pizza reviews, recounted the harrowing incident in a video posted on X, TikTok and Instagram. The trouble began, he said, after unhooking his vessel from buoys for a day on the water with his mother.

“No power, no radio, no anchor, no nothing,” he said. “Heavy, heavy winds. Next thing you know, Captain Dave is lost at sea … trying not to crash into ships in the harbor, just heading out to the channel, steamboats in the way honking. Captain Dave doesn’t know what he’s going to do.”

Another boater radioed the Coast Guard after seeing him in distress, Portnoy said.

“The Coast Guard comes — four burly dudes,” he said, before thanking them for towing him and his lifeless boat back to mooring.

The @USCGNortheast X account was quick to comment on Portnoy’s video.

“You’re welcome, Dave,” it wrote, with a shoutout to his beloved pitbull. “Tell Miss Peaches we said hi and remember to boat safe!”

Barstool Sports, started by Portnoy in 2003 in Milton, Mass., has more than 38 million followers on TikTok and nearly 17 million on Instagram.
