(Tribune News Service) — Over Memorial Day weekend, the U.S. Coast Guard Station Cortez saved seven people who went overboard after their boats capsized in Manatee County, the Coast Guard said in a news release.

The first rescue happened at 11 p.m. Saturday, in Ellenton near Woody’s River Roo on the Manatee River.

According to the release, three people were rescued by the Cortez rescue crew after their boat took on water and capsized. All three people were wearing life jackets.

The second rescue happened at 8 a.m., following an emergency radio signal alert stating that four people had capsized a vessel 40 miles west of Egmont Key, the release said.

An Air Station Clearwater aircrew also aided in the rescue. All four people were rescued and had on life jackets, the release said.

The Coast Guard confirmed that all of the people rescued were in good health, and a safety marine information broadcast has been issued for the capsized vessel as a hazard to navigation.

“Everyone rescued within the past 24 hours had all the necessary safety equipment aboard for a successful rescue,” Boatswain’s Mate Second Class Zachary Smith said in the release.

“These people didn’t have the best time on the water, but they all went home safe and sound to their loved ones.”
