VICENZA, Italy — Residents of the Veneto region, which includes U.S. Army Garrison Italy, now have an easier way to get around by train.
Trenitalia’s “Tap&Tap” system has been extended across all regional train lines in Veneto, meaning passengers can simply tap in and out of trains using contactless payment methods such as a credit card, smartphone or watch.
Since its launch last year, 48,000 journeys have been made using the tap system across Italy. A significant portion of those rides were within Venice and from Padova to Venice, according to Trenitalia.
Travelers from Vicenza to Bassano del Grappa, Verona, Padova, or Venice, to name a few routes, can tap their payment at the validating machine before boarding, and tap out on arrival. Machine locations vary but generally are found near the tracks.
Fares are calculated depending on where passengers tap in and out. Forgetting to tap out results in the maximum fare being applied unless corrected at a Trenitalia service desk by the end of the day.
Tickets purchased through Tap&Tap are single, regular second class fares. Families hoping to purchase multiple seats on one credit card, or those buying reduced rate or first-class fares, will still need to buy tickets via the Trenitalia app or in person.
