COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Tribune News Service) — The man who died in a shooting in a shopping center parking lot in Colorado Springs last week has been identified by the El Paso County Coroner’s Office as 24-year-old Shahid Burke.

According to a Fort Carson official, Sgt. Shahid Burke was an active duty U.S. Army servicemember at Fort Carson. He served in the military for more than five years as an infantryman .

“The 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team family is devastated by the loss of Sgt. Shahid Burke. He was an instrumental member of the Raider team, and his loss will be felt across the brigade,” said Col. Anthony Keller, commander of the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division.

“Our hearts are with Burke’s family and all who knew him during this difficult time. We are committed to supporting our soldiers struggling with this sudden and tragic loss.”

Colorado Springs police said they responded to the parking lot after reports of a shooting shortly after 2:30 a.m. and were told that a man had been shot and left in a vehicle.

About 15 minutes later, officers received a call from a local hospital that a man had arrived with a gunshot wound. When police got to the hospital, they were told he died from his injuries.

Police said no one is currently in custody for the shooting. Anyone with information can call 719-444-7000, or 719-634-7867 to remain anonymous.

This was the 11th homicide of the year, police said. At this time last year, there were six homicides.
