AUSTIN, Texas — The Army is investigating the death of a Fort Bliss soldier who was injured Saturday in a training accident.

Sgt. Christopher Sutton, 26, was a truck driver with the 47th Brigade Support Battalion and was participating in a training exercise at the time that he was injured, according to Fort Bliss officials. The statement from the base did not include any details of how Sutton sustained his injuries.

He was medically evacuated to University Medical Center in the nearby town of El Paso in critical condition, where he died shortly after arriving, base officials said.

The Army Combat Readiness Center out of Fort Novosel, Ala., is investigating the circumstances of the accident.

Lt. Col. Jed Hudson, battalion commander, said in a statement that Sutton was a valued member of the unit and a “leader of the highest caliber.”

“He was an expert in his craft, always dependable, and he made a positive impact wherever he went. We collectively mourn his loss, and our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this incredibly difficult time,” he said.

Sutton enlisted in November 2019 from Honolulu, Hawaii, and attended basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., according to his service record. He deployed to Poland from June to September 2022.

He joined the 1st Armored Division at Fort Bliss in February.

His military education included the Basic Leader Course, Unit Armorer Certification Course and Field Sanitation Team Training. His awards and decorations included the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.
