Pfc. Matthew Perez, a paratrooper with 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, died Sept. 13, 2024, from injuries he suffered at the Joint Readiness Training Center at Fort Johnson, La. (82nd Airborne Division)

A paratrooper from the 82nd Airborne Division was fatally injured during recent training at a combined arms instruction facility in Louisiana, the Army said.

Pfc. Matthew Perez, assigned to the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, died Friday from injuries “sustained during training” at the Joint Readiness Training Center at Fort Johnson, La., the division said in a Facebook statement Monday.

No further details were immediately available Tuesday. An investigation is underway, the statement said.

Lt. Gen. Chris Donahue, commander of the 18th Airborne Corps, said that Perez’s loss had hit the unit hard and that the focus now is on caring for his loved ones.

“Paratroopers like him are what make this nation and our Army great, and his loss is truly heartbreaking for the Sky Dragon family,” Donahue said in a separate statement.

The Joint Readiness Training Center is one of the service’s three “dirt” training facilities, providing infantry brigades with joint and combined arms training against a near-peer adversary, the base website said.

The training allows for complete integration with the Air Force and other services and can include host nation officials and citizens, simulated insurgents or terrorists, news media coverage and nongovernmental organizations.

The 82nd Airborne, based at Fort Liberty, N.C., specializes in parachute assaults to secure key objectives, according to the unit website.
