CAMP HUMPHREYS, South Korea — A 27-year-old U.S. soldier stationed here died last month after his vehicle crashed in Pyeongtaek city, roughly 40 miles south of Seoul, according to the 2nd Infantry Division.
Sgt. Dorian Baker of Columbia, S.C., a signal support systems specialist assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 4-2 Attack Battalion, 2nd Combat Aviation Brigade, was driving alone June 29 in Pyeongtaek when his vehicle crashed, according to a 2nd ID news release Tuesday.
A July 3 statement on the aviation brigade’s Facebook page said Baker’s car had rolled over; his was the only vehicle involved in the incident, according to both command statements.
Baker was taken by Korean National Police and emergency medical responders to St. Mary’s Hospital in Pyeongtaek, where he was pronounced dead at 6:35 a.m. that day, according to 2nd ID.
“The 4-2 Attack Battalion is deeply saddened by the loss of Sgt. Baker,” battalion commander Lt. Col. William Carrion said in the release. “Sgt. Baker leaves behind a profound impact of friendship and camaraderie felt by all who had the privilege of serving alongside him.”
Baker’s professionalism “was unparalleled” and he leaves behind a “legacy of service and dedication to the organization,” the aviation brigade’s post on Facebook states.
Baker joined the Army in December 2014 and was assigned to the battalion in January 2023, according to 2nd ID. His awards include four Army Achievement Medals, two Army Good Conduct Medals, the Global War on Terror Service Medal and the Korean Defense Medal.
Army Signal support systems specialists maintain the service’s computer systems, local area networks, power generators and other communication equipment.
Roughly 28,500 U.S. troops are stationed in South Korea, most of them at Camp Humphreys, the largest U.S. military base overseas.
