A 38-year-old second lieutenant at Fort Jackson, S.C., was participating in a group run Monday as part of the chaplain officer basic training course when he collapsed and later died at a local hospital, the Army said.
Second Lt. Pascal Buma was a member of the Oklahoma National Guard and a student in the basic training course for new officers, the Institute for Religious Leadership at Fort Jackson said.
“It is with great sorrow that we mourn the loss of one of our own,” Col. Louis DelTufo, a chaplain and commandant of the institute, said in a statement. “We ask for your prayers for the family, fellow students and our staff here at the Institute.”
During a group run at about 6:44 a.m., Buma fell back and passed out. He was breathing and had a pulse when on-site personnel with the training course called for emergency medical services, according to the readiness center.
When medical personnel arrived, they connected a heart monitor and performed CPR. Buma was taken to The Medical University of South Carolina, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
This is the third death of a soldier since Oct. 1 that has occurred during on-duty sports, recreation and physical training, according to the readiness center. Since 2019, the average of such deaths has been one soldier a year.
