NAPLES, Italy — Col. Scott Horrigan, whose Army career spans more than two decades and includes multiple tours in Afghanistan, assumed command Thursday of U.S. Army Garrison Italy.
Horrigan relieved Col. Matthew Gomlak at the garrison’s Vicenza headquarters during a ceremony attended by more than 300 people, including Maj. Gen. Todd Wasmund, commanding general of the Army’s Southern European Task Force, Africa.
USAG Italy is home to the task force and several other commands, including elements of the 173rd Infantry Brigade, the 207th Military Intelligence Brigade and the 509th Signal Battalion. It also includes Camp Darby, a logistics hub near Livorno, that facilitates deployment of military vehicles and weapons worldwide.
Most recently, Horrigan was an instructor at the School of Advanced Military Studies in Leavenworth, Kan., according to his biography on the garrison’s web page. He also served as commander of the 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment in the 10th Mountain Division and as commander of Task Force Southeast Afghanistan.
Horrigan, a husband and father of four, was commissioned from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, according to USAG Italy.
Gomlak, who served as commander of the garrison since July 2021, next will serve in Belgium as the executive offcer to Gen. Christopher Cavoli, head of U.S. European Command and Supreme Allied Commander, Europe.
