KADENA AIR BASE, Okinawa — An elementary school and a middle school at the home of the 18th Wing canceled classes Monday due to a sewer line issue that was resolved that afternoon.
Department of Defense Education Activity made the decision after 4 a.m. Monday when it was informed about “sewer challenges” at Kadena Elementary and Ryukyu Middle, according to posts on the schools’ official Facebook pages.
Bechtel Elementary School also canceled classes, according to one of the posts. It has been operating out of Kadena Elementary and Ryukyu Middle as its campus undergoes renovations on Camp Courtney.
The issue was resolved that afternoon, and classes will resume Tuesday, according to a post on Ryukyu Middle’s Facebook page.
“We would like to thank our installation partners and command leadership for their continued support throughout this situation,” the message said. “We also sincerely thank our parents for your flexibility and understanding.”
DODEA informed families about the closures through its notification system, which sends phone calls and emails to parents, DODEA-Pacific spokeswoman Miranda Ferguson told Stars and Stripes by email Monday. Teachers and staff members were allowed to telework.
Ferguson referred questions about the sewer issue to Kadena’s 18th Wing, which acknowledged questions emailed by Stars and Stripes on Monday but did not immediately provide responses.
Some residents of the Stillwell Park neighborhood near the schools were affected by a “sewage outage,” according to a 4:45 a.m. Monday post on the Okinawa Military Family Housing Facebook page.
A sewer blockage was resolved that afternoon, according to a follow-up post at 2:40 p.m.
The base housing office, responding to a comment on the post, said drinking water was unaffected.
